The controversial celebrity Courtney Love is reportedly being sued by an American fashion designer who claims the singer defamed her reputation on micro-blogging site Twitter.
Dawn Simorangkir, a designer based in Texas, alleges in the defamation lawsuit that Love damaged her career and personal reputation by calling her a “drug-pushing prostitute” in a series of tweets on Twitter in March 2009. A number of other assertions about Simorangkir were also published to Love’s 40,000 or so Twitter followers.
Love’s comments were believed to have related to a dispute the singer was having with designer Simorangkir at the time over demands for payment for clothes she had made for her.
The case is set to be heard in a Los Angeles court at the start of February, at which time Simorangkir will attempt to prove that Love had what the designer’s lawyers claim was:
“nothing short of an obsessive and delusional crusade to destroy Simorangkir’s reputation and her livelihood”
Simorangkir is expected to seek millions of dollars in damages, which Love will have to cover using some form of professional insurance as an artist should she lose the case.
